AZZURRA was nominated by the German Design Council for the prestigious Designpreis 2011 for its Nuvola collection, its new Thin series, and its communication design. The Design Award is sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology and is awarded for exceptional international achievements in the area of design. It was given for the first time in 1969 under the title of “Federal Prize for Good Form”.
Since 2006, the prize has been presented yearly under the name of “Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany” and is awarded for outstanding achievements in the area of product design and communication design. Since 2010, it has also been seen as a prize to encourage the rise of up-and-coming talent in the design sector.
What distinguishes the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany from other competitions is that it offers the business community a platform to share the achievements of their designs and brands. Its uniqueness also lies in the fact that participation in the competition is reserved exclusively to design items that have already won an award elsewhere. This ensures that only products that have received recognition for their excellence in the field of design will be taken into consideration. The two creative disciplines of communication design and product design are judged at the same time and through a single process. The independent jury, which is formally convened by the German Federal Minister of Economics, is composed of established experts in both disciplines.
By adjudicating all entries in a cross-disciplinary manner, the pinnacle of international developments in the world of design may be recognised, while reflecting upon the complex image of our everyday culture and its future. The competition is open exclusively to entries that have been nominated for the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany by the Ministries for Trade and Industry, or by the Senators of the German States or by the German Design Council, on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. There is no limit on the number of nominations.
Only products from the fields of product design and communication design, which have been successful in the formal selection procedure (overseen by a panel of experts) or in an international competition, will be eligible to enter the competition for the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany. Moreover, entries may only be made by projects that are already available on the market or that have already been published on the date of the nomination, and that were launched no earlier than five years prior to the competition.
